Career
The generalist needs a new definition.
The word generalist needs a new definition.
It used to mean you could stretch across roles inside your own team. A designer who could do a bit of research, the visual, some copy. That was the range.
Now the boundary itself has moved.
What you are expected to do now
- Own your craft deeply. No excuses there.
- Understand how growth thinks about funnels.
- Read data well enough that you don't need an analyst for every question.
- Write briefs marketing can actually run with.
- Sit in engineering discussions and follow the trade-offs.
The team wall has quietly become a suggestion, not a fence.
This is the bar rising, not dropping
Here is the part people miss. This is not the bar getting lower. It is the bar getting higher. You don't get to be average at your craft just because you're broad. You have to be great at your one thing and functional across three others.
Old generalist vs new generalist
- The old generalist was wide within a team.
- The new generalist is wide across teams, and deep in one.
That is a harder job. But honestly, it is a more interesting one.
