Design

Sameness creates the perfect opportunity for designers to add value

Open five apps in the same category. Same nav, same cards, same onboarding, same "clean" look. Hide the logo and you can't tell them apart.

Most designers find this depressing. I find it exciting.

Why everything looks the same

  • Design systems made us efficient, and identical
  • The same UI kits are everywhere
  • Everyone benchmarks the same 3 apps
  • A/B tests push everyone to the same safe spot
  • AI is trained on all of it, so it makes more of it

Efficiency won. Distinction quietly died.

Why that's an opportunity

When everything feels the same:

  • Users pick on price, and price wars hurt everyone
  • Nobody remembers the fifth identical app
  • Businesses get desperate for an edge

There's one edge nobody can copy in a sprint: how a product feels. That's our job.

Where the value hides

  • The states everyone skips: empty, error, loading, "something went wrong with your money"
  • Voice and copy. Talk like a person, get remembered like one
  • Patterns that fit your domain, not borrowed from big consumer apps
  • One signature moment people mention to a friend
  • The last 10%. AI gets everyone to 90%. That last bit is the whole difference.

The shift

Stop asking "what's the standard pattern here?"

Start asking "everyone does this, so what does it make possible for us?"

Don't waste it by shipping the template.
