Taste is one of the pillars you stand on
For years, "taste" was treated as a soft word in our industry.
Craft was measurable. Process was teachable. Tools were listable on a resume.
Taste? Taste was that vague thing seniors mentioned in design critiques and nobody could define.
I think that era is over. Taste just became one of the few pillars a designer actually stands on.
Why taste suddenly matters so much
Simple math.
- When producing options was expensive, the valuable person was the one who could produce
- Now AI produces options for free. Twenty layouts, five tones of copy, three visual directions, in minutes
- When options become free, the valuable person is the one who can choose
Choosing well, again and again, without a rulebook. That is taste.
Average is now automated. Taste is the tiebreaker.
What taste actually is (and is not)
Let me try to define the undefinable:
- Taste is not personal preference. "I like dark mode" is preference
- Taste is judgment about quality that turns out to be right. You look at two options that both "work" and you know which one is correct for this user, this brand, this moment
- Taste is knowing what to remove. Anyone can add. The confident deletion is the tasteful act
- Taste is smelling the fake. That stock illustration energy, that AI-generated blandness, that pattern copied from a domain where it meant something else
- And taste is consistency. One good call is luck. A hundred good calls across projects is taste
The good news: taste is built, not born
Some people talk about taste like it is a gift. In my experience it is a diet plus reps:
- Fix your input diet. You cannot develop taste consuming only trending shots and mood boards. Study products that survived ten years. Study why the boring bank app earns more trust than the beautiful one
- Compare, don't just consume. Put two similar products side by side and force yourself to articulate why one feels better. The articulation is the exercise
- Ship and watch. Taste without feedback is just confidence. Every launch teaches you where your judgment was right and where it was fashion
- Sit with people who have it. Taste transfers through critique. One hour with a sharp reviewer rewires you more than ten tutorials
- Build a "why it works" library, not an inspiration folder. Saving screens is collecting. Writing one line about why it works is learning
The uncomfortable truth
Here is the part nobody says loudly.
If your taste is average, AI is not your assistant. It is your replacement. Because average taste plus AI output equals AI output.
But if your taste is sharp, AI is the best thing that ever happened to you. Infinite hands, one discerning eye. Yours.
Craft can be copied. Tools get democratized. Process gets templatized.
Taste compounds quietly, and it cannot be downloaded.
Stand on it.
